Flavorizer bars and heat deflectors

Grates and bars out

The manual's thorough clean, top down: at least twice a year, quarterly if you grill a lot. Low heat, uneven heat and food sticking all say it is overdue.

  1. Let the grill go cold and turn the gas off. Weber UK says disconnect it.
  2. Open the lid.
  3. Brush the grates and lift them out.
  4. Scrape the Flavorizer bars with the plastic scraper; brush them if needed.
  5. Lift out the 5 bars, in gloves: they get rough edges.
  6. Look for holes rusted right through. Surface rust is wear; replace bars that are holed (66795).

Deflectors, cookbox and back in

The manual's order, continued.

  1. Clean the burner ports while the bars are out.
  2. Scrape the 3 heat deflectors, brush them if needed and lift them out.
  3. Scrape the cookbox sides and floor down into the opening that leads to the grease tray.
  4. Empty the grease tray and catch pan.
  5. Refit the deflectors, then the bars, then the grates.
  6. Preheat on high 10 to 15 minutes before you cook (Weber UK).
