Tighten the flame safety nut

Get it ready: gas off, oven upside down

Ooni's help-centre method ("How to tighten the FSD bolt for Ooni Koda 16"). Try the easy fixes in it goes out when I let go first. The manual sends other service to a qualified technician; the help centre says ask a local gas engineer if you are not comfortable.

  1. Turn the gas off, disconnect the regulator, and let the oven go completely cold.
  2. Take the stone out.
  3. Fold the legs and lay the oven upside down on a soft surface, such as a blanket.
  4. Disconnect the hose from the gas terminal (UK: loosen the hose clip; US: the 19 mm nut, anticlockwise).
  5. Pull the knob straight off the valve stem.
  6. Undo the 2 collar screws with a cross-head (Phillips) screwdriver and lift the collar off.

Open the housing and tighten the nut

The help centre.

  1. Undo the 11 black 6 mm screws round the housing and the 1 10 mm screw at the valve. Keep them in order.
  2. Lift the housing clear of the gas terminal and the valve stem.
  3. Find the copper tube from the thermocouple, and the brass flame safety nut where it meets the valve.
  4. Loosen the nut anticlockwise with an 8 mm (5/16 in) spanner.
  5. Re-tighten it clockwise until secure. Do not over-tighten.

Later ovens with a Control Box Panel: undo only the panel's 6 × 6 mm screws and lift the small panel off, instead of steps 1 and 2 (help centre).

Close it up and test

The help centre, with the screw order from the natural-gas kit manual.

  1. Refit the housing over the terminal and stem, and tighten all the screws until secure. Do not over-tighten.
  2. Collar: start one screw part-way, fit the collar, then start the second, and tighten both.
  3. Push the knob back onto the stem.
  4. Turn the oven over, unfold the legs and put the stone back.
  5. Reconnect the hose and leak test every joint you touched.
  6. Light it, holding the knob in for 5 seconds. If it still goes out, contact Ooni support.

Ooni's tip: if a screw just spins, a gentle extra turn until it clicks usually catches it.
