Light it and turn it off
Light it from the back: push, turn slowly, hold
Outdoors only. The manuals: never in a building, garage or any enclosed area, never on or under a balcony or deck, and never on a boat or in a vehicle. Burning gas makes carbon monoxide, which you cannot see or smell.
The knob is on the back, so you light it from behind the oven. The Essentials Guide and the North America manual.
- Keep your face and hands as far from the oven as you can, keep others away from the mouth, and do not look into it while lighting: flames can escape (the manual; Essentials Guide).
- Check the knob is off (line at 12 o'clock), then open the gas slowly at the cylinder.
- Push the knob in and turn it slowly anticlockwise (as you look at it from behind) from 12 o'clock towards 9, taking at least 3 seconds so gas reaches the burner.
- It clicks just past 9 o'clock and the burner lights.
- Keep the knob pressed in for 5 seconds after it lights, then let go. The Australian manual says 10 seconds.
- Look through the viewing hole beside the knob to see the flame. No flame: turn the knob off, wait 5 minutes, and try again (the manual).
Max is the line at 9 o'clock, Min at 6 o'clock, seen from behind.
Light it with a match
Outdoors only. The manuals: never in a building, garage or any enclosed area, never on or under a balcony or deck, and never on a boat or in a vehicle. Burning gas makes carbon monoxide, which you cannot see or smell.
The manual and the help centre, with the matchstick holder that comes in the box.
- If it will not light after several tries, turn the knob off and wait 5 minutes for any gas to clear.
- Put on gloves. Put a match in the matchstick holder and light it.
- Hold it in through the mouth, over the burner at the back of the oven (help centre).
- Push the knob in and turn it slowly to Max: the burner should light at once (the manual).
- Keep the knob pressed in for 5 seconds, and take the holder out.
- Not lit within seconds: knob off, wait 5 minutes and try again. Then clean the piezo so the spark works next time.
Turn it off, and if the flame goes out
The Essentials Guide.
- Turn the knob fully clockwise to off (line at 12 o'clock).
- Turn the gas off at the cylinder (UK: regulator switch back down, level).
- Detach the regulator from the cylinder after every use.
- Wait at least 1 hour before you move or clean it. Store it only dry and completely cool.
- If the flame goes out while cooking: turn the gas off at the cylinder, detach it, and wait 5 minutes before you relight.
- Relight as usual, but hold the knob in for 20 seconds after it lights.
