Unbox and set it up
Build the cart and lift the grill in
The manual's set-up with the cart. The grill alone weighs about 140 kg.
- Lay the cart cradle upside down on a soft pad, fit the stainless caps over the threaded rods and screw on the 4 legs.
- Fit the castors with the 2 locking ones side by side at the front, turn the cart over and lock them.
- Lift the grill with at least two people, in gloves. The quick start guide: "Because of its weight, we recommend the grill unit be carried by two people." At 140 kg, this guide suggests a third.
- Carry it by the side-table brackets on the lower band, never by the handle or the dome.
- Lower it into the cradle with the draft door centred between the two locking legs.
- Push the cap onto the dome with the lettering to the front, over the thermometer.
What is in the box. The grill on its steel cart with the two bamboo side tables (121030; 121031 stands on three ceramic feet instead). In the box (the manual, p. 11): the cast-iron cap, the dome thermometer, the bamboo handle (loose: you fit it with two cap nuts), the five-piece firebox in its stainless frame, the cast-iron charcoal grate, the charcoal basket with divider, the fire ring, the Smart Grid System (frame, ring, two half deflector stones, two half drip trays, two half grates), the smoking rail and slider, the grid lifter, the ash shovel, the fittings bag and the manual (German). About 140 kg of grill. No cover.
Fit the inside parts
The manual's order.
- Set the firebox frame in with its ash opening exactly in front of the draft door.
- Stand the 5 ceramic segments in the frame one by one.
- Set the fire ring on top with its recess exactly in front of the chip-feeder flap.
- Lay the charcoal grate in, then the basket with its opening towards the chip feeder.
- Stand the Smart Grid System frame on the fire ring, hook in the ring, then add stones, drip trays and grates as the cook needs.
- Hook the side tables onto their brackets. The manual: bend the brackets slightly if they do not fit.
Where to stand it
- Outdoors only. Never indoors: the manual warns of suffocation.
- Nothing overhead. Not under a canopy or a patio roof. The manual: the air coming out of the grill is very hot too.
- Firm, level ground that carries the weight, away from anything that burns.
- Room behind it. Monolith's LeChef built-in drawing asks for at least 570 mm from the grill's centre to a wall behind, so the dome can open, and 2000 mm clear above.
Check your local rules on open fires as well (the manual).
