Smoke test the seal

Find leaks with smoke

Monolith rejects the paper test. Its method (2019 FAQ and the Classic's 2016 sheet, both written for older grills):

  1. Set the grill up for indirect cooking, with the deflector in.
  2. Bring it to about 110 °C.
  3. Add smoking chips.
  4. Close the cap fully.
  5. Watch the seam all round. Where smoke escapes, the seal is weak: check the wing nuts and the bands, then the gasket.
