Realign the lid

Before you start

The lid is heavy and held open by springs. The manual: "Do not underestimate the high weight of the lid." Never just let go of it when you close it, keep hands and tools out from between lid and base, and replace damaged springs at once. Band work needs two people and gloves: one holds the lid (the Classic's 2016 hinge sheet, written for older grills; the manual's safety page asks the same care).

When the lid overhangs to one side or does not close square, first check it sits right in the hinge: a quick-release lid that went back on crooked, or loose wing nuts, does the same. If it is still crooked, the bands have turned in their ground groove, often after transport. The fix turns the bands back.

Monolith publishes no alignment sheet for the Junior. This guide re-seats the lid, then uses method B of the Classic's 2016 hinge sheet (older grills) on the bands.

Glaze dust and tiny chips at the edge of the ground groove are normal (2019 FAQ).

Re-seat the lid, then turn the bands

This guide's method: the manual's hinge, then method B of the 2016 hinge sheet (older grills) for the bands.

  1. With the grill cold, open the lid fully, loosen the wing nuts, lift the lid a little and set it back so both pins sit fully down in their slots. Tighten the wing nuts.
  2. If it still sits crooked, your helper lowers the lid gently onto the base and keeps hold of it.
  3. Loosen the upper band's clamp screw, then the lower band's. Do not take the nuts off.
  4. Turn or slide the bands in their groove until the lid sits square, with the handle lined up over the chip feeder.
  5. Tighten the lower clamp screw, then the upper, until the lugs lean towards each other.
  6. Run a smoke test. If it still does not close, contact Monolith service through your dealer.
