Open it safely: burp

Burp the lid before you open it

A rush of air into a hot, starved fire can make it flare out of the lid (a flashback). It is worse the more the draft door is closed. From the manual.

1. Put on gloves and stand to the side, face clear.
2. Lift the lid by the handle only 4 to 5 cm.
3. Wait a moment so oxygen flows in slowly.
4. Then open it fully.
5. When you close it, lower it by the handle all the way. Never just let go.
