Firebox, fire ring, protector stone and grate
Cracks, and changing the firebox
The 2019 FAQ and the manual. The Junior's firebox is one piece: there are no segments to swap.
- Keep using a cracked firebox or fire ring. Stress cracks act as expansion joints, are not a defect, rarely spread and do not affect the cook (2019 FAQ).
- To change a broken firebox (201053-J), lift out the grid, the charcoal grate and the fire ring gently.
- Lift the old firebox out and set the new one in with its front notch exactly at the draft door.
- Check the protector stone (201054-J) lies flat on the base floor inside it (protector stone).
- Refit the fire ring with its recess exactly in front of the chip-feeder flap.
- Lay the charcoal grate back on the firebox ledge, then the grid.
Check or fit the protector stone
The manual: "Junior only: put the protector stone in the firebox on the floor of the body." It keeps the underside from getting too hot.
- With the grill cold, lift out the grid, the charcoal grate, the fire ring and the firebox (deep clean).
- Lift the protector stone out and look for breaks.
- Brush the base floor under it. No water (the manual).
- Lay the stone, or a new one (201054-J), flat in the middle of the base floor.
- Refit the firebox, fire ring, grate and grid in the manual's order.
