It will not get hot

Check, in order:

• Ash. The fire grate is small, and with no drawer the ash builds up under it. Clear it every cook.
• Vents. Both fully open while lighting, the top vent's cap swung aside.
• Charcoal. Too little lit. More charcoal means more heat, up to the manual's 1.36 kg (3 lb).
• The dome. Open 10 minutes while lighting, then closed (the manual).
