Check and tighten the bands

Before you touch the bands

The hinge and the bands are under high spring tension. The manual: never loosen the bands or take the hinge apart without the hinge disengagement kit fitted, because the hinge cannot be removed safely without it; any change of dome, base or bands needs two people, gloves and safety glasses. Refit the base band first, front pin first, with a helper holding the hinge (Kamado Joe Europe).

When: after the first fire, when the manual says the bands may lose some tension ("completely normal"), then each season or twice a year and at each deep clean (Kamado Joe's 2012 guide and 2014 video, both Classic I).

Alignment: on the Classic II each band has a fixation pin that sits in a hole in the ceramic at the front (Kamado Joe Europe), so the band cannot be slid round to centre the dome as on the Classic I. This job only checks and tightens.

The 2025 manual refers to a "bands adjustment section" that is not in it.

Check the bolts are tight

Kamado Joe's 2012 guide (Classic I) and owners; the Classic II manuals give no method.

  1. Close the dome; the grill must be cold.
  2. Find the bolts where each band is clamped at the hinge, upper and lower.
  3. Hold the acorn nut with a spanner and try the Allen key in the bolt: you should not be able to turn it easily.
  4. If one is loose, tighten it firmly, a little at a time, alternating top and bottom (owners). Do not overtighten and strip it.
  5. Check each band still sits centred over the gasket.
  6. Check again after the next few cooks.
