Light it and turn it off

Light the gas burner

Outdoors only. Never in a building, garage, tent, vehicle, boat, or under a balcony or deck, and never as a heater. Never cover the mouth while it is lit, and keep 50 mm clear round the base of the dock for air: the fumes contain carbon monoxide (the manual).

  1. Check the wedges are out, the leak test has passed and the mouth is clear, then open the cylinder valve.
  2. Press the control dial in and turn it to 9 o'clock, until you hear clicking and the burner lights.
  3. Turn it on anticlockwise to 7 o'clock and hold it in for up to 30 seconds, so the flame failure device lets go.
  4. Push the dial firmly in and release it.
  5. Check the flame is yellow and rolls along the top of the oven.
  6. If it will not light or goes out: turn the dial off and the cylinder valve off, and wait 5 minutes before you try again.

Turn it off

The manual (pp. 42 and 43).

  1. Turn off the gas at the cylinder valve first, so the gas left in the burner and pipe burns away safely.
  2. Wait 3 minutes.
  3. Turn the control dial back to off, the dot at 12 o'clock.
  4. Now the regulator can come off. If you take the hose off too, put the cap back on the gas inlet.
  5. Leave the oven where it stands: it stays hot for a few hours. Never move it while it is warm.

If the flame goes out while you cook (wind, an empty cylinder): If the flame goes out, turn off the control dial and the cylinder valve, and wait 5 minutes before you relight (the manual).
