Light it

Load and light the charcoal

BGE US's load-and-light guide, with BGE Europe where it differs.

1. Rake the old charcoal so ash falls through the fire grate, and take the ash out.
2. Fill with natural lump charcoal to 1 to 5 cm (1/2 to 2 in) below the bottom of the fire ring (BGE US; the 2026 cheat sheet draws the same line).
3. Light 1 or 2 starters, part buried (BGE US). BGE Europe spreads 3 on top and says don't bury them.
4. Leave the dome and the draft door fully open: 7 to 10 minutes (BGE US), 10 to 15 (BGE Europe), 12 (cheat sheet).
5. Put in the grid or the convEGGtor and close the dome, the rEGGulator fitted.
6. Start closing both vents as you near your target (the vents).
